Physical security is everything that keeps people away from your hardware, because an attacker who can touch a machine has an easy job.

Key concepts

• Think in layers: the property line, the building, the room, and finally the rack. Each layer buys you time. Time lets your people notice and respond.
• Control who enters sensitive areas using badges, locks, and a visitor log. Review those access lists whenever people change roles. Escort visitors anywhere sensitive equipment lives.
• Cameras and alarms deter intruders and give you a record after an event. Confirm they genuinely record and retain footage. Store recordings where an intruder cannot erase them.
• Laptops, drives, and backup media leave a building easily. Encrypt them so a lost device does not become a data breach.
• Shred paper and wipe or destroy old drives before disposal. Discarded equipment often still holds readable business data. Deleting files is not the same as wiping a drive.

Why it matters for your business
