Information security is the broad discipline of keeping your organization's information from being stolen, altered, destroyed, or locked away by someone demanding payment.

Key concepts

• Three goals define the field. Confidentiality keeps data private. Integrity keeps it accurate and unaltered. Availability keeps it reachable when work depends on it.
• Controls layer together. Policies, training, access limits, encryption, backups, and monitoring each cover gaps the others leave open. No single tool covers everything.
• Risk drives priority. Protect first what would hurt most if lost, and match spending to consequence rather than to fashion.
• People are part of the system. Clear policies and regular training turn staff from the easiest target into a useful early warning.
• Security is continuous, not a project. Systems change, threats change, and controls need review to keep matching reality.

Why it matters for your business

Nearly every part of a modern business now runs on data, so protecting it means protecting revenue, reputation, and your ability to operate at all. Good security is mostly consistent basics done reliably, not exotic tooling.
